Mandatory Disclaimer!
Attention, readers! Sorry for the aggressive welcome to the paragraph. We need to make a big big disclaimer before we continue with the topic. We’re not going to include actual GIFs!. Don’t get us wrong, it is not because we cannot find any. There are a lot of casino and gambing-related GIFs out there that are super cool. However, since we do not want to get in any trouble, we are not going to include them because of legal reasons (copyright). Instead, we’re going to include royalty-free images that ‘describe’ the GIFs, if that makes sence. We hope you understand and that you’ve paid attention reading this paragraph. Now, we will continue with the rest of the article!
History of GIF – Not as Recent as You’d Think
You might think that gifs are something relatively new to our world but, oh, how wrong we all are! Do we actually know what a gif is? Let’s check!
GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. This is a bitmap image format, developed back in 1987 by Steve Wilhite. He is an American computer scientist, part of the team at CompuServe. Sounds a bit difficult to understand, right? Patrick Davidson from MemeFactory has a more understandable explanation:
An animated gif is an image that’s been encoded using the graphics interchange format where it has multiple frames encoded into a single image file and a web browser or other software will play those images back in animated sequence automatically.
The idea was to provide a color image format that would replace the run-length encoding (RLE) for their file downloading areas. The GIF files are 8-bit and can ‘generate’ only up to 256 colors per image.
Are GIFs Legit?
To be honest, not all people using the World Wide Web are big fans of GIFs. There are a lot of disadvantages, including:
- The quality of the image presented is not perfect;
- The format is not semi-transparency-friendly;
- The images are uncompressed;
And yet, there some advantages that we cannot deny:
- GIF is supported by all browsers.
- At the time, HTML did not support video, which is why it was easier to share GIFs instead.
- They’re so easy to make – it is much easier to make a short, yet super fun GIF rather than make a full video and not be able to upload it and send it to whoever you want.
Can You Make a GIF of Your Own?
The beauty of GIFs is that anyone with a computer or/and a phone can create a GIF. It’s not so hard and it’s super fun to do. There are a few platforms where you can create one. So, here’s how you can GIF:
- There are GIF-making websites available, where you can get creative. This includes sites like GIPHY and Imgur – probably the most popular and often-used websites for GIFs.
- If you’re more comfortable working with an app, there are ways you can create cool GIFs on the go. Whether you use iOS or Android, you can use: GIPHY CAM, GIF Maker and even Google Gboard to make whatever you want.
- Finally, a Digital Art Software is also an option. However, keep in mind that it might be a bit more time-consuming and might annoy you a lot until you’re done with the final product.
Where Can You Use GIFs?
Now that you’ve created a few fun GIFs, it’s time to share them with the world. Of course, there is a place and time for such things, and you should know where it is acceptable to use them. We’ve thought that it would be a good idea to prep a quick Do’s and Don’t’s list for your convenience. Because a GIF is not always the way to go.
DO send GIFs:
- To your besties in a group or other chats to make them laugh.
- Make GIFs that you know people would like.
- Use GIFs to break the ice when meeting new people at a social event.
DON’T send GIFs:
- To your boss in an email – it’s not professional!
- Use GIFs in presentations for work or school – in some cases it might be ok, but try to avoid it.
- To your significant other when you’re breaking up with them – that’s just rude!
